Prepare
Your safety comes first. Proper preparation can help you and your team clean more efficiently and more safely.
Wait before entering the listing
Check your local authority for guidance on how long to wait before entering a space occupied by a person who may have been exposed to COVID-19. For example, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests waiting 24 hours. If that’s not possible, we recommend waiting at least 3 hours. Visit the Help Center for information on your local guidelines.
Gather supplies
It’s important to have the right supplies on hand, and to use specific items for each step in the process. Some items to have on hand include:
- Disposable gloves
- Mask or cloth face covering
- Multi-surface disinfectant
Clean
Cleaning is when you remove germs and dirt from surfaces. For example, using a soapy cloth to wipe off a kitchen counter or stovetop. It’s important to complete this step before sanitizing your space. During the cleaning stage, hosts must:
- Dust, sweep or vacuum all floors
- Clean or mop hard surfaces (such as walls and flooring) with water and soap
- Wash all dishes and laundry
- Empty all garbage cans and line with fresh bags
Sanitize
Sanitizing is when you use chemicals to reduce the number of bacteria. During this step, we require hosts to sanitize all high-touch surfaces. For example, spraying chemical disinfectant on doorknobs, light switches, and cabinets. During the sanitize phase, hosts must:
- Spray high-touch surfaces in each room with a disinfectant spray
- Let the disinfectant stand for the length of time specified on the product label
- Allow the surface to air-dry
Check
After cleaning and sanitizing, we ask hosts to review the room-by-room checklists in the cleaning handbook to ensure that all appropriate areas have been cleaned and sanitized. If you host with others, share these cleaning checklists with your co-hosts or cleaning professionals.
Reset
To help prevent cross-contamination, it’s important to finish cleaning and sanitizing a room before resetting it for the next guest. During the reset stage, hosts must:
- Wash your hands and put on clean gloves before refilling any guest supplies, towels, or linens
- When you finish sanitizing and resetting a room, close the door and disinfect the doorknob. Once sanitized, don’t re-enter this space.
- Safely dispose of or wash cleaning supplies and protective gear
- Empty and sanitize the vacuum cleaner after every cleaning
